Looks like the Basketcase car is about to be reborn. It was my very first 16v, the mother of all 190 project cars, a $500 16v with a blown head. Originally mentioned in a post from way back in my newbie days, 2009 - https://forums.190rev.net/showthread....t-new-to-mercs

Hey guys, [...] after years of searching I have finally tracked down and bought my dream car - a 16v of course! It's kinda busted, bought it for $500 so I'm way under-budget, I also sold my 76 Scout to supplement some part purchasing.

The reason she was so cheap is that she didn't start but cranks so I had a few things to do - first thing is I found air puffs out of the coolant reservoir and oil floating in the coolant but not the other way around. Engine oil is still good and clean. So the previous owner blew the HG (he said he didn't know what happened, RIGHT :sarcasm: )[...].

I never did get that head done, 3 months later I bought another 16v for $1900, and this one ran! my project car begins! i have been sitting on an 86 NAM as a track project for a couple years now. in that time i have slowly been building up the parts catalog needed to breath new life into this car.

last on the list is:
struts and strut mounts
fuel pump/filter/accumulator assembly
head gasket set and head bolts
16v side skirt pieces
16v front bumper
door and trunk locks
manual transmission parts.

i recently picked up a stripped down 85 euro 16v. it has all the parts my project car has been waiting for so the journey begins!

here's the project cars current condition upon arrival yesterday.

"my project car begins", what a joke! funny how plans change with what life throws at you. The stripped down 85 euro ended up giving it's heart to Dimples, and it's steering/diff/body pieces to "the shed".

I've recently been fortunate enough come across another unfortunate 16v, but in this 16v's death, Basketcase is reborn, and shall henceforth be known as "Phönix"! (It's German, of course, for Phoenix). Here's the beautiful donor...











You might be wondering why this car is a donor since its body is pretty straight and it has nice paint, but the clue is in the license plate, this car is dying from cancer...

Out here working on this things Megasquirt conversion.



I've got the oil cooler fixed, was leaking from galled threads and I'm redoing the idle air circuit.

Redesigned the idle air circuit path and idle air valve wiring. Added a 1N4001 diode for the 2 pin bosch valve. Used the ECE market 16v idle air hoses, with the lower going into a right angle brass barb fitting then going into the rubber pvc reducer used to connect the air cleaner box to the throttle body. The upper portion goes into a Jenvey idle air distribution block, and from there uses flexible hard line into vac nipples drilled and threaded into the take runners.



Video of the first start attempt after this modification to the megasquirt install. a little rough but we'll get there.

some small roadblocks have presented themselves.

IAC transistor on the MS2 board seems to have let out the ghost, even with the schottky diode protection in place.



and since it can start and idle now, a new issue has presented itself, a tremendous oil leak out of the front.


at first i thought it was these missing oil pan bolts here in the front but after replacing them, it still leaks, badly. likely culprit is the front main seal can't see any wetness higher than the crank pulley.


looks like a front cover teardown is in the cards, which is not too bad considering my only skin in the game so far is the 5.5 liters of oil and the fan belt i bought. more to come!
