  1. Alain V. 16v track day project

I bought this 16v in 2010 (if I remember right).
The body was in good shape, only has bad clear coat on the roof, but the interior, dash, suspension, brakes, were all in bad shape.

I decided to make a street legal track day car, but on a very "reasonable" budget,,,,
because I have other project cars that also need my time and money.

I also work a lot of hours every week (usually 70 or more as I am self employed) so I did not want to get too wild on my 190 build.
Main goals are to keep it simple, reliable, lighten it up, and pick on all the higher HP/more expensive cars at the track.

Here is what I started with:

First item was a complete tune up and fluids/filters changed. I also installed a new timing chain, tensioner, and adjusted the valves.

Then I did a complete shifter rebuild and modified the bottom for shorter travel.

  2. Next I added a MOMO steering wheel and quick release mount.

I also had the original exhaust header ceramic coated.

And built up a free flowing exhaust system (also very loud!)

  3. I also added a front lip to the air dam.

Removed the rear subframe and all of the suspension bushings.

I also added some bracing to the rear subframe.

I made new rear control arms from links and bearing from speedway motors, AKE's rear sway bar and a 124 wagon front, and complete ground control suspension.

  4. more suspension pics,

On the brakes, I installed CARBOTECH comp brake pads on new rotors, braided lines and a new master cylinder.

  5. front sway bars comparing the stock 16v to the 124 wagon

    new light driver seat,

Also added front brake cooling ducts and hoses in front bumper and did a few track days,

  6. Now it is time to remove some weight!
    GOOD bye mr sun roof!

    Light weight steering pump bracket,

Added some cheapo-depot euro headlights (no they aren't really lighter, but they look much better than the US version lights.) I transferred the yellow fog reflectors into the light too.

Removed the power windows and converted the fronts to manual. The rears will be fixed plastic soon.

  7. Good bye to non working A/C and decided to completely gut and re wire the entire car.

    Stock wiring was 50 pounds,

replacement is much lighter and simple,

I'd love it if you could give more details. Which wiring kit is this? What do you plan to do for gauges? Rewiring the car is my next big project, but I don't know where to start.

  9. Also re located the battery, the ABS pump and ABS computer to the rear seat area,

While I am at it, I might as well convert to EFI with COP ignition.

  17. I know some of you might find this hard to believe, but I am funding this project about 90 percent with the scrap metal that I recycle at my shop every month.
I used to give the stuff away to an older man who would come by and pick it up, but he passed away, so I just started throwing it in the back of my truck and cashing it in myself. I change a lot of brake rotors, shocks, etc and that stuff adds up pretty quick. It also keeps my wife happy that I am not "throwing the bank" at this car.
I had to kind of promise her that this would not happen (again), as she still remembers that I built a 16v for SCCA racing back in the early 1990's and I went a little nuts back then. (I was fast and won 2 championships, but I was also broke!)

I still want to get a springblock for the diff for my car,a 3.92 ring & pinion from an old 115 chassis diesel, and (eventually a lightweight flywheel in the future).

I am also saving up to eventually put the whole body on a diet. I am hoping to be able to get the EVO 1 body kit from AKE with light hood, front fenders, trunk, front air dam, wing, and fiberglass doors. When I do this I will also add a little weight and put in a roll bar.

Then I may try to see if I can have a T-5 transmission custom fit with similar gear ratios as the old DTM cars, but that will probably be a year or so down the road.

I finally got my hands on a cheap set of CLK light wheels for my track tires too.
