Thread: Meet Sophie. 2.5-16 A Picture Story

It might garner a higher resale value with GC coilovers or similar, especially since the car has been repainted and modified and unmodified, I don't think you'll ever recoup the cost of the SLS system even if sold to a collector.

Glad to see this car end up in good hands.

As far as suspension, it all depends what you want to do with the car. If your intention is to bring it to collector shows, then the SLS would probably be appreciated. If you are just going to drive it around, with the occasional auto-x or hpde, then no reason to spend the money.

Sophie rolls again.  I just finished bolting her back together.  There are still a few things to do and get.

    Now she is incognito.

That DTM video just erased all the discouraged feelings about my non-running sportline that have been building up. I am so broke right now that I was seriously considering dumping both 190s and getting an econo box with no miles and just forgetting the whole car thing for a few years.

After watching that video, my sportline's place in my life has been cemented.

Oh, and I'm really happy about you getting that 2.5 and putting it right.

I took Sophie to Cars and Coffee Charlotte this morning so she could shake the cobwebs out of her head.

I like knowing that I won't see another one.  One could spend a lot of time fixing up an old car.

Or a spend lot of money on a supercar.

Only to feel like one in a herd.

Sophie had been in storage since last year.  The AC lost it's charge, two windows would not open and one would not close, good thing the rain held off.

Great job! would you mind shairing the tire size spec and choice on your rims? They appear to be 215/45, but not sure. Thanks.

The tires are Pirelli P6's 205 50 16 on 16x8 et 34 evo 1's. The suspension is the H&R cup kit. As you can see there is some tuck. There is about 2mm clearance to the fender when the suspension is fully loaded onto the bumpstops. It took some tinkering to eliminate tire rub but I did not pull the fenders.

Hey Trevor, I am glad you enjoyed test driving Sophie.

  10. The car is 190E perfection. Period.

May I ask what sort of "tinkering" you did to eliminate the rubbing. Inquiring minds want to know!

To eliminate the tire rub, I spent a day playing around with it using a laser alignment system. The front suspension components were removed and reset paying particular attention to proper measurement specs and torque values. The front has a little more camber. I did not take enough notes to know for sure what realy did the trick but I can post the alignment specs later.

Member TrevorEly invited Sophie and I to the Euro Auto Festival at the BMW plant in South Carolina.  We were late getting there, had no credentials and were not registered.  But the lady was determined, after all it was the 2.5 that took the fight to the M3 twenty years ago so we snuck into the show with some inside help, drove through the crowd in the middle of the show and took up front row parking alongside Trevor's beautiful 85.

    Awesome event!

'Sophie' was looking good, fooling most everybody that walked by with an untrained eye!

Sophie poses for a group shot.

It is speed week here in Charlotte and Sophie wants to sneak into the show. Mercedes Benz mingles with NASCAR.

    Nice groupshot.

Hey, I was in walmart last night buying gumout and saw a product called "freeze12" that is supposedly an r12 replacement (luckily alot of people drive old cars around here, so needing r12 must be common) Might be safer than the butane idea.

I also have all the AC lines pulled out of my 16v that you could have to replace all the seals to do an r134a conversion with it all outside of the car to save alot of frustration.

Just thought I would let you know.

Really dig the Senna tribute too..

freeze12 works great, keep an eye on the dryer window if you dont have gauges.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I must say this was a excellent rescue.

Originally I had my mind set on 17" monoblocks until I saw this car and stance with 16" Evo 1 wheels. If I ever get purchase a 16v the attached pic is how I would like it to look.

    Good work Merccossie

Red was just for kicks and giggles, it is my daily driver. It is the Almandine Red that was offered for the 2.5's.
