i need help! could someone with a "world car" EPC account check my VIN? im trying to find out if the euro i have is ECE or KAT.

i have tried my free epc account and various vin decoders and all of them come up empty. i even had mbclub.ru check it but the moderator said it is not in the database.

    WDB2010341A174247

    so far i understand the VIN structure is as follows;
    WDB2010341A174247 is for manufacturer - daimler-benz.
    WDB2010341A174247 is 201.034 of course.
WDB2010341A174247 is for left hand drive.
WDB2010341A174247 is manufacturing plant (A-E is Sindelfingen and F-H is Bremen).
WDB2010341A174247 is a six digit build number.
    right?
is the build number of this VIN made up after importing by the california BAR?
VIN Check doesnt reveal much either.

VIN doesn't run in the world edition EPC either. After entry it asks if it is a European, North American or Japanese market vehicle. So I don't think that was the original VIN. I think they stuck VIN numbers in multiple places around the car, so maybe you can find the original somewhere else...

You can try the Classic Center... It has worked in the past for me, but that last time I tried they told me I had to provide proof of ownership. So you can probably do that if you want.

If that sticker is to be believed, you have an emission system = KAT.

Do you have pin 3 in the X11 connector? Its the circular connector over by the EZL computer. If it is there then it was a factory emission system = KAT. If not, its an ECE. Also, there may be a sticker on the radiator support detailing what spark plugs to use. I think all KATs used Bosch H8DC while ECEs used H5DC (both are very hard to find).

X11 has a pin 3 but it has been opened or modified and i can see that an extra wire was brought up to it, spark plug referenced on radiator support sticker says to use H5DC. car has a little separate blue box that i am pretty sure the o2 sensor connects to from the wires i followed, this boxes wires are spliced into the engine harness.

also it was my understanding that the KAT became available during 1986. beside the 1985 stamp, i believe mine is an early version. it has a longer, wider hood with a higher ramped border area. it has a thin wiper with right hand side parking. an extra small little wiper attached to the bottom. additionally it has the single squirt nozzle and grooves in the rear bumper.

if it comes to contacting the classic center, i have proof of ownership.

i scoured the car for other stickers. i found several original stickers, and every one i found was legit mercedes and in german with that same vin. looking again, the x11 has no pin 3, i was looking and some sort of thing similar to it that connects to this little box i mentioned earlier. also h5dc plugs for sure. and on a sticker i found it mentions the real manufacturer date. it's 11/84. with all these clues im pretty sure its an ECE. this is totally cool and im super 190 nerding out right now.

HAHA, yeah def an ECE! Sometimes the EPC just doesn't like some vin numbers. I can't get the Datacard on my 240D for instance.

for a good while now, my high mileage 16v (320000+) was going through some oil. so i saved up for the special valve spring tool and bought the stem seals. on the weekend on the 8th i decided to do the job and as it turns out it wasn't just the seals.

cylinder one has blown rings and is just letting everything through. the oil was so fuel washed that im afraid there's a lot more damage. so the old engine is coming out and the ECE euro is going in.

the ECE's engine passed its compression test at a retardedly high amount - 210 psi cold. and it's leakdown was flawless.

    so we go from here,

    to here,

getting it all ready to lift.

i was only able to remove the engines over the weekend, the ECE came out on saturday and the NAM came out on sunday. i gotta swap some parts and re-enable the heater core exit out of the back of the head. most of the ECE's accessories were disable and removed. i'lll be peicing that together and hopefully will be able to drop the engine in on the weekend of the 22nd.
